Mount Union College, known as the University of Mount Union, since August 1, 2010, is a 4-year private, liberal arts college in Alliance, which is a city in Stark and Mahoning counties, in Ohio state, USA, with a population of over 23 000 inhabitants, as the time of the 2000 census.
The college was established in 1846 and was founded by Orville Nelson Hartshorn as `a place where men and women could be educated with equal opportunity, science would parallel the humanities and there would be no distinction due to race, color or sex.` It offers its students 55 majors and a wide variety of minors and programs, in various areas of study, its mission being `To prepare students for meaningful work, fulfilling lives and responsible citizenship`.
Mount Union's athletic teams are known as the Purple Raiders and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are purple and white and their mascot is MUcaw.
Over the years, Mount Union has produced numerous notable alumni, among them also being: Will Lamartine Thompson - composer, Henry Solomon Lehr - Founder, Ohio Northern University, Charles Armstrong - virologist, physician in the U.S. Public Health Service, and William McKinley - 25th President of the United States.
